Ibiza, Ibiza
those of the Balearic Islands including Mallorca (where it is whispered the wires became). Legends say that Ibiza had been blessed by the gods, turned into a magical sanctuary where nothing that lives that can harm a human being. The Island has been a great location for those searching for inspiration, and tranquillity. Ibiza today is a popular location for party goers, artists, and those who live a bohemian life style. Which in my personal opinion think is a very suitable description of ibizan hounds themselves.
The Ibizan Hound has been on this landscape for longer than anyone has recorded. Used as a multi purpose hunting dog, ridding farmland of vermin and returning the offending creatures as food to the master. A very versatile predator, the ibizan can hunt by day or night, single or in a pack. The general quarry being hare, the great intelligence, stealth and endurance has made the breed successful as deer and boar hunters as well.
Recently they have been used as field dogs for flushing and retrieving game birds alongside gunshot. Being gentle mouthed they make wonderful retrievers for game bird as the soft-mouthed dogs leave their prey unscathed.
Being so successful in the field, they were often used for poaching, which led to their banning in France. The red dogs had been favoured by the poachers, the dogs blended into their background and could move virtually invisible while on the prowl. Even to this day, white and high white-content dogs are favoured above their red counterparts due to the association.
This has luckily not passed to NA, and dogs of both colour and markings are happily looked upon.
